Donor Sperm

For individuals or couples

For some people, donor sperm is the pathway that makes pregnancy possible. It can be part of treatment for single women, same-sex female couples, and heterosexual couples where male-factor infertility means another route is needed to build a family.

With Thérapie Fertility, donor sperm treatment is approached with care, clarity and respect for the significance of the decision. Our team will guide you through the medical, practical, and legal aspects of treatment, ensuring you feel informed and supported at every step.

What is donor sperm, and how does it work?

Donor sperm is sperm used in fertility treatment to help someone build their family. It can be used with IUI, IVF or reciprocal IVF, depending on your circumstances. At Thérapie Fertility, you choose and order your donor sperm through the sperm bank, and our team manages the coordination until your treatment starts.

Understanding more about Donor Sperm

with Dr. Megat Kamaruzaman

Why choose Thérapie Fertility for donor sperm?

It is also about understanding the implications of donor conception, feeling comfortable with the decisions you make, and having the right support for your future family. Our doctors and nurses are here to guide you with honesty, compassion and expertise from the beginning

  • Clear support around donor selection, treatment planning and next steps

The donor sperm treatment process

  • 01

    Treatment planning

The first step is understanding which treatment pathway is most suitable for you. Our doctors will review your fertility history, any previous treatment and your family-building goals before recommending the next step.

This stage is also where we explain how donor sperm treatment works in Ireland, including legal requirements and the support available to you.

  • 02

    Donor selection and ordering

If you decide to move forward, you will create a free account with the sperm bank and choose your donor directly. Some people focus on practical criteria, while others focus more on physical traits, background, or characteristics that feel important to them.

Many couples choose a donor who has features similar to the partner, who will not be genetically connected to the child, but this is entirely a personal choice. Once you have chosen and ordered your donor sperm, our clinic coordinates shipping and storage until treatment is due to begin.

  • 03

    Implications counselling

Because donor sperm is regulated, implications counselling is a required part of treatment. This session is designed to help you think about the long-term implications of donor conception and how you may wish to speak to your family and future child about their origins.

It is widely accepted that early, age-appropriate disclosure is in a child’s best interests. Counselling gives you space to reflect on these conversations in a supportive and informed way.

  • 04

    Treatment with donor sperm

Once the donor sperm is in place and your planning is complete, treatment can begin. Depending on your circumstances, this may be donor insemination, IVF or Reciprocal IVF.

The clinical steps will vary depending on the treatment chosen, but our team will explain clearly what to expect, what the timeline may look like and how donor sperm will be used during your cycle.

Donor sperm can be a suitable option for single women, same-sex female couples, couples with a trans male partner, and heterosexual couples where male-factor infertility is part of the picture. The right treatment pathway will depend on your fertility history, your goals and the type of treatment recommended for you.

Donor sperm is part of a wider treatment plan, so outcomes will depend on factors such as age, fertility history, the treatment used and your individual medical circumstances. Our doctors will explain clearly what may be realistic for you and what the next steps could look like.

Your donor sperm questions answered

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often about donor sperm at Thérapie Fertility.

  • Fertility clinics are only licensed to work with specific sperm banks. In Dublin, Thérapie Fertility works with European Sperm Bank and in Belfast, Thérapie Fertility works with Cryos.

  • In Ireland and the UK there are donor family limits. This is the number of families that can be created with one donor. In Ireland the limit is 4 families and in the UK that limit is 10 families.

  • Yes absolutely. Many of our patients at Thérapie Fertility are single women choosing to become pregnant with the assistance of a sperm donor. In this case you may choose to do an IUI or IVF cycle, as advised by your doctor.

  • Not at present. We encourage patients to use their embryos by doing frozen embryo transfers before starting a new cycle with us.

  • No. Donor Sperm is purchased directly from our partner sperm bank, European Sperm Bank. It is then shipped directly to our clinic.
