Frozen Embryo Transfer
FET
A frozen embryo transfer is often the final step in an IVF or ICSI journey. If embryos have already been created and frozen, FET allows one of them to be thawed and transferred at a later stage, when the body is ready and the timing is right.
For many patients, this can feel like a hopeful next step after a previous cycle. It is also usually more straightforward than going through a full IVF or ICSI cycle again. Our doctors and nurses guide you through the process with clear information, personalised planning and supportive care, so you understand what to expect before, during and after treatment.

Understanding more about a Frozen Embryo Transfer
with Senior Fertility Midwife Emma
What is a Frozen Embryo Transfer and how does it work?
There are two types of embryo transfer: fresh and frozen. A frozen embryo transfer, also called an FET, occurs when an embryo created in an earlier IVF or ICSI cycle and is thawed and transferred into the uterus.
In many cases, embryos are frozen because it offers a better opportunity to prepare the body carefully for transfer or because your treating doctor has decided it would be safer for you to have a frozen embryo transfer following on from a stimulation cycle.
Frozen transfers can be as successful as fresh transfers and, in many situations, may offer more suitable conditions for implantation. This is because it can be easier to prepare the uterine lining and hormone levels in a separate cycle. If our doctors feel a fresh transfer may not offer the best conditions, they may recommend a freeze-all approach and plan a frozen transfer instead.

The Frozen Embryo Transfer process
Who is a Frozen Embryo Transfer suitable for?
Frozen embryos can be stored for future use, and there is no fixed limit on how long an embryo can remain frozen. If you have embryos in storage and are thinking about next steps, our team can talk you through timing, medication and what may be realistic for your individual circumstances.
- You have frozen embryos from a previous treatment cycle
- A fresh transfer was not recommended in your original cycle
- A freeze-all cycle was planned
- You are returning to use embryos for another pregnancy attempt
- You would like a treatment pathway that is more straightforward than repeating a full IVF or ICSI cycle
A frozen embryo transfer may be suitable for anyone who has embryos already frozen from a previous IVF or ICSI cycle and wishes to use them to try to become pregnant.
How do I know if I need a Frozen Embryo Transfer?
You may need a frozen embryo transfer if you already have embryos in storage from a previous IVF or ICSI cycle and want to use them to try to become pregnant. It may also be recommended if your earlier cycle was planned as a freeze-all cycle, or if a fresh transfer was not considered the best option at the time.
The best way to know whether FET is the right next step is through a consultation. Our doctors will review your treatment history, embryo storage details, cycle timing and any medication needed to help you move forward with clarity.

A period after a frozen embryo transfer usually occurs if the cycle is unsuccessful and medication is stopped, though the timing can vary slightly from person to person.
If a transfer is successful, pregnancy dating is based on both the embryo's age and the transfer date. Our team will explain this clearly when your pregnancy blood test and early scan are arranged.
