IVF

Expert care for your unique journey

Sometimes fertility treatment becomes part of the journey when pregnancy has not happened as hoped. IVF, or in vitro fertilisation, can help people build their families in many different circumstances, including female-factor infertility, male-factor infertility, unexplained infertility, donor conception, same-sex parenthood, or becoming a parent on your own.

At Thérapie Fertility, your IVF plan is built around your fertility history, test results, personal circumstances, and hopes for the future. We combine clinical expertise with honest, compassionate care, so you understand your options clearly and feel supported at every stage of treatment.

Understanding more about IVF

with our Medical Director Dr. John

What is IVF and how does it work?

IVF, or in vitro fertilisation, means fertilisation outside the body. Eggs and sperm are placed together in a laboratory, with the aim of creating embryos. These embryos are usually allowed to develop to day 5 or 6, known as the blastocyst stage, before being transferred or frozen for future use. This means one IVF cycle may create embryos that can be used for more than one pregnancy attempt. At Thérapie Fertility, we know IVF can feel like a big emotional and physical step. We offer transparent, evidence-based IVF treatment in Ireland, supporting patients through the process, costs, and individual factors that may influence success.

The IVF process

  • 01

    Ovarian stimulation & monitoring

The first stage of the IVF process is ovarian stimulation. Fertility medication, usually given as injections, encourages the ovaries to produce multiple follicles, each of which may contain an egg. You will attend monitoring appointments, including ultrasound scans and sometimes blood tests, so we can carefully track your response and the timing of treatment. When the follicles are ready, a trigger injection is given, and an egg collection is planned for 36.5 hours later at the clinic.

  • 02

    Egg retrieval

Egg retrieval is a minor theatre procedure carried out under conscious sedation. During this stage of IVF treatment, an ultrasound probe guides a fine needle through the vaginal wall into the ovaries. You will receive pain relief, and you should not experience excessive pain during the procedure. Fluid is gently collected from each follicle and passed to the laboratory, where the embryology team checks for eggs. Before you go home, we will let you know how many eggs were collected. Our team will explain the procedure, recovery, and aftercare clearly, helping you feel prepared and supported.

  • 03

    Fertilisation & culture

Once eggs are collected, the sperm sample is prepared in the laboratory. In IVF, eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish so fertilisation can happen outside the body. Fertilised eggs are checked the next day, and embryos are cultured, usually to day 5 or 6, in our Embryoscope time-lapse incubator at no additional cost. Suitable embryos may be transferred or frozen for future use through a frozen embryo transfer.

  • 04

    Embryo transfer

Embryo transfer is the placement of an embryo into the uterus using a fine catheter. It is usually a short, straightforward procedure. In some IVF cycles, a fresh embryo transfer happens 5 or 6 days after egg collection. In others, freezing all embryos and planning a frozen transfer later may offer safer or more suitable conditions. This decision is always based on your individual response, safety, and treatment plan. After your embryo transfer, you will attend the clinic about 10 days later for a blood test to check if you are pregnant.

How do I know if I need IVF?

You may need IVF if you have been trying to conceive without success, have blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, unexplained infertility, male-factor infertility, or are using donor sperm. The best way to know is through a fertility consultation and tests, where your doctor can recommend the most suitable treatment.

Who is IVF suitable for?

IVF may be suitable for people with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, unexplained infertility, or those who have not conceived through other treatments. It can also support single women and same-sex female couples using donor sperm. Where male-factor infertility is involved, IVF may be recommended alongside ICSI. Your age, fertility history, and test results all help guide your plan, including what fertility tests are recommended.

IVF may be right for you if you have blocked, absent or damaged fallopian tubes, or if you've been living with unexplained infertility. It's also a well-established option for those experiencing male factor subfertility, often used alongside ICSI, and for those hoping to conceive with donor sperm.

Your IVF questions answered

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often about IVF at Thérapie Fertility.

  • No, this isnt a service we provide. If we believe you would benefit from this service, our team will refer you on.

  • IVF is not something which can ever be a sure thing. A core part of the consultation process in advance of your treatment is for our team to inform you of what we think your chance of success is based on your history and test results. This will help you make the most informed decision about the process and whether it is right for you. Most women and couples who undergo IVF will succeed but it can sometimes take multiple attempts. However, through our evidence based fertility treatment, we are confident that our team of experts can help to give you the best shot at a successful outcome. You can view our success rates here.

  • No, this is not an add on which we provide.

  • IVF is the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology and for the majority of cases, IVF or other fertility treatments can help you realise your dream of becoming pregnant.

  • Yes, it is of course possible to transfer multiple embryos. However, in most cases we usually recommend transferring just one or two. The reason for this is to try to avoid a multiple pregnancy. While twin or triplet pregnancies can be very healthy, they do come with increased risks. In order to reduce this risk, we like to try for a healthy singleton pregnancy. If your medical and fertility history indicates, we may advise to transfer more than one embryo.
